BREEDERS OBSERVATIONS
Chachani Mochica has a soft handling, lustrous fleece with good crimp, bundling and fleece length along with a great presence. He was Champion Junior male at HBM in 2008. He won Champion Commercial fleece at Royal Canberra in 2009. Mochica is a well framed male and keen to work. Jim Watts comments: "In April 2013 at Glen Waverly Alpacas (Betty Whitten), Glen Innes, New South Wales, I classed all of the 9 progeny (3 males as potential sires; 6 top breeding females) of Chachani Mochica as stud animals. One of the daughters, Glen Waverly Helen, grew 95 millimetres of fleece for 6 months at 13 months of age. In the previous fleece, Helen tested 15.8 micron for fibre diameter. I can't recall seeing a longer Huacaya fleece for only 5 months fleece growth. It is genetic seedstock like this that will allow us to breed Huacaya alpacas that can produce combing length wool throughout their lifetimes. Also, such occurrences allow us to think in terms of breeding alpacas that can reach combing length in 6 months and be shorn twice a year. This is exactly what we have already achieved with SRS(R) Merino sheep."
